See through was inspired by a very rare disorder called dissociative identity disorder. The first time I came across a video about a person with DID it fascinated me immediately. Of course I had heard about the concept of multiple personalities before from movies and tv shows.
But to actually learn about the whole science behind this disorder was mind-blowing and frankly a bit unbelievable at first. As I kept on reading and learning about it, it got more and more clear to me that this particular disorder is extremely rare, hard to diagnose and therefore very misunderstood. I mean…just imagine you met a person who told you they shared their body with more than one personality…that have different names, ages, genders and even races?! Would you believe them right away?
So, I made it a mission to present this rare disorder in the most engaging way possible. To make something so hidden and invisible feel a bit more visual and tangible. To introduce the audience to something so little known, and help break the stigma surrounding it..
At its core, this short film explores a young woman’s FRAGMENTED IDENTITY. When her mind breaks to protect her, who’s left to face the consequences?.
In the most general sense, identity is person’s sense of self, established by their unique characteristics, beliefs, experiences, values, memories and appearance. It is individuality.
“IDENTITY IS NEVER STATIC. ALWAYS IN THE MAKING AND NEVER MADE”. -Michael Wood
Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a mental health condition. People with DID have two or more separate identities. These personalities (called alters) control their behavior at different times. The identities might have different genders, ethnicities, interests and ways of interacting with their environments. DID can lead to gaps in memory and hallucinations.
Dissociative identity disorder can develop in response to severe, repeated trauma during early childhood. Common causes include physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, as well as neglect, natural disasters, war, and other traumatic events. If such experiences occur before the personality fully forms (typically before age 9), the identity can fragment—dividing traits and emotions into separate parts, some of which remain hidden until a safe space allows them to emerge.
Particular identities may emerge in specific circumstances. Transitions from one identity to another are often triggered by emotional stress. Some alters often take on the role of “a protector,” shielding the individual from emotional pain or danger.
The ‘‘host’’ or the ‘‘core identity’’ of a DID system often initially has no awareness of their trauma from the past. Once starting therapy, receiving a diagnosis, or becoming familiar with the condition, a person with this disorder starts to recognize the signs of switching, other alters and recover some traumatic memories.
