DIRECTOR’S THOUGHT:

The first time I came across a video about a person with DID it fascinated me immediately. Of course I had heard about the concept of multiple personalities before from movies or tv shows.

But to actually learn about the whole science behind this disorder was mind-blowing and frankly a bit unbelievable at first. As I kept on reading and learning about it, it got more and more clear to me that this particular disorder is extremely rare, hard to diagnose and therefore very misunderstood. I mean…just imagine you met a person who told you they shared their body with more than one personality…that have different names, ages, genders and even races?! Would you believe them right away?

Psychology is one of the most mysterious studies and no wonder has it inspired so many storytellers to use it as their source of inspiration for their art. Likewise it inspired me to write See-through. To make something so hidden, so invisible a bit more visual and tangible. To introduce to the audience something that is so poorly known of and break down the stigma around it.

The main theme of the film

The main theme of this short film is IDENTITY.The protagonist struggles to understand her whole identity as she often feels like she shares her body with more than one consciousness. She gets a strange feeling of dissociation through nightmares and intense flashbacks.

What is identity?

In the most general sense, identity is person’s sense of self, established by their unique characteristics, beliefs, experiences, values, memories and appearance. It is individuality.

What is dissociative identity disorder (DID)?

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a mental health condition. People with DID have two or more separate identities. These personalities (called alters) control their behavior at different times. The identities might have different genders, ethnicities, interests and ways of interacting with their environments. DID can lead to gaps in memory and hallucinations.

Why DID occures?

Dissociative identity disorder can develop if a person experiences severe recurrent trauma in early childhood. Most common causes of this disorder are physical, sexual and emotional abuse, but very common are also neglect, natural disasters, wars and traumatic incidents. If such traumatic experiences happen before one’s personality develops fully (till age 9) then their identity, including personality and emotions, goes through a process of fragmentation. This is when the body divides traits and feelings, and groups them into smaller sections, keeping some of them hidden until a safe space for expression is provided.

What are ''alters''?

Particular identities may emerge in specific circumstances. Transitions from one identity to another are often triggered by emotional stress. In the possession-form of dissociative identity disorder, alternate identities are visibly obvious to people around the individual. The ‘‘host’’ or the ‘‘core identity’’ of a DID system often initially has no awareness of their trauma from the past. Once starting therapy, receiving a diagnosis, or becoming familiar with the condition, a person with this disorder starts to recognize the signs of switching, other alters and regains some memories from their trauma.

Fun facts about DID:
  • It’s a coping mechanism.
  • The disorder affects between 0.01 and 1% of the population. It can occur at any age. Women are more likely than men to have DID.
  • According to some studies DID is more common than young women with bulimia.
  • Contrary to popular belief, survivors with DID are not more dangerous than the general public. The crime rate, violent use of weapons, domestic disturbances, etc. are no greater than (and often less than) the general population.
  • The average number of personalities in a DID system is 10. Some alters play specific roles in the person’s life for many years.
